Mt Gambier Trunk Water Main DN400 MSCL Valve Replacements

Team Civil was engaged as part of an early works design program to investigate the condition of valve sets on John Watson Avenue, Crouch Street and Lake Terrace in Mt, Gambier and develop new designs/recommendations to repair or replace the existing valves. The second stage of the works was the replacement of an existing valve with a new one, installing a refurbished valve from the local SA Water depot and the installation of supporting infrastructure including cathodic protection.

Scope of works performed:

The works associated with the Mt Gambier TWM DN400 Trunk Water Main Replacement Design and Construct contract included, but not limited to:

  • Producing the initial project Brief for SA Water, detailing the scope which was undefined when we were originally engaged:
  • Engagement of third-party designer, for this contract SMEC were engaged.
  • Completion of site inputs to create the design such as Topographical Survey, Service locating, pipe inspection, dilapidation of the existing site, sourcing of existing limited drawing information to create the design, etc.
  • Completed both a 70% design, along with 90% submission for formal review to SA Water prior to finalising issued for Construction information to undertake the main site works.
  • The design outputs included design basis report, material selections inclusive of material data sheets for procurement, Safety in Design (SID) outputs, environmental factors, drawings produced specifically for the project works, etc.
  • Team Civil managed the entire design and construction phase inclusive of all design, construction and commissioning outputs.
  • Creation of site-specific Project, Safety, Quality and Environmental plans, inclusive the administration thereof through the course of the project.
  • Stakeholder Management of all areas of works, including notifications to businesses and residents.
  • Multiple traffic management setups on DPTI roads on both day and night shift, with traffic flows of approximately 10,000 vehicles per day.
  • Procurement of all materials and subcontractor packages to execute the works.
  • Off-site steel fabrication, assembly and testing to significantly reduce times on site, along with ensuring certainty in program delivery.
  • Isolation of LV electrical systems and SCADA prior to undertaking the works.
  • Cutting and Removal of asphalt, concrete curbing, paths, and concrete thrust blocks on both DPTI roads and council side roads.
  • Removal of concrete pram ramps and footpaths.
  • Excavations to a depth of approximately 2.5 metres in depth to facilitate the removal and replacement of new MSCL valves and pipe spools.
  • Removal of Asbestos utilising specialist sub-contractor.
  • Removal of all spoil from site to EPA accredited site.
  • Draining of pipeline prior to cutting of existing MSCL water main.
  • Removal and then Installation of new MSCL piping spools, lining up new spools with existing steel infrastructure prior to final fabrication on site.
  • On site fabrication inclusive of welding pipe into final position, positioning of the prefabricated rio cages for thrust blocks, prior to pouring concrete.
  • On completion of fabrication works denso wrapping and painting of structural steel work for corrosive protection, to maintain 100-year design life of the new asset.
  • Completed modifications of concrete stormwater side entry pits and concrete pipes prior to back filling.
  • Pouring of concrete thrust blocks prior to backfilling of the excavation, with these transferred to verge area to enable traffic to be opened soon after re-instatement activities.
  • Backfilling activities within the road utilising DPTI specification requirements.
  • Re-construction of asphalt, concrete drainage, concrete curbing, concrete footpaths, and pram ramps.
  • Re-charging of the watermain and electrical sub systems within a 24-hour period to ensure water delivery to SA Water customers.
  • Cathodic Protection inputs including insulated joints.
  • Landscaping reinstatement and remediation works.
  • Ongoing survey and final survey for inclusion to As Constructed drawings.
